Students will stay at Amigos for Christ, a non-profit organization that facilitates water, health, education and economic development opportunities in rural Nicaraguan communities. Students will work alongside Nicaraguan families on projects chosen by the community members. This immersion experience fosters solidarity between our students and the families they are working with, and encourages students to consider a more global perspective. Amigos for Christ incorporates faith into all aspects of their work in Nicaragua. Students are encouraged to engage in their own spiritual development as well as the relationship-building efforts with the surrounding community members.

Funds will be allocated to subsidize student participation in this experience. Full breakdown of the costs below:

Round-trip Airfare: $1035 / person x 18 students = $18,630

Lodging/Meals/In-Country Transportation: $275 / person x 18 students = $4,950

Chaperone Costs: $290 / person x 18 students + $400 (travel meals) = $5,620

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

This year due to the violent political climate in Nicaragua, we had to cancel our planned service immersion. Due to deadly the clashes of protesters and government police in Managua, Nicaragua, the U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Consular Affairs currently has listed Nicaragua with a Level 3 Travel Advisory stating "Reconsider travel to Nicaragua due to civil unrest, crime, limited healthcare availability, and arbitrary enforcement of laws." Here is the link to the U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Consular Affairs.

In place of our Rotary funding for Nicaragua, we are allocating this funding towards our annual Appalachian Service Immersion. This was communicated to Mary at the Rotary on November 21st, 2018 by Shannon Morrison at OLP.
