Summary: Upgrade and renovation of Teen Center serving 100 youth a day in La Mesa, California
Critical to successful teen activities is the rehabilitation of "The Club" Teen Center located on the campus of La Mesa Middle School at 7775 Junior High Drive which has been well used and well worn since opening in 2006. This 4,000 square foot facility is owned by the City of La Mesa, but the interior is the responsibility of the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County. The Teen Center is badly in need of 10 new computers ($8,500) wall covering ($1,500) a couch ($1,000) and a video security system ($4,000) in order to keep it safe and appealing to the nearly 100 youth a day from three La Mesa schools who regularly use it.
The equipment will be the property of the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County. This organization has responsibility for maintenance of equipment and training of staff who supervise teens in its appropriate use. The computers are essential for tutoring and homework activities which are lead by Boys & Girls Clubs staff. The video security system will provide a high level of safety and security as the Center Director will be able to monitor all activity areas from a single location.
Total budget for the project is $15,000 to pay for the above equipment. All funds will be expended in the 2013-14 Rotary Year. In addition to $5,000 funding from the La Mesa Rotary Club and a proposed District grant of $3,000, additional funds have been secured from individual Rotarians totaling $7,000.
