Climate Kids (www.climatekids.org) is a series of community level collaborative projects in the south coast Eco-region that provide youth education on climate change through science activities, storytelling, and art. Each Climate Kids project brings together local artists, scientists, educators, and storytellers to engage students of all socioeconomic levels and inspire them to become environmental stewards.
Climate Kids "Traveling Trunks" provide all the resources you need to teach climate science in the classroom. Each trunk includes background information, lesson plans, power points, activities, and materials to increase climate literacy for K-8 youth. Our three trunks feature interactive and hands on science, storytelling and art curriculum aligned to NGSS. The trunks can be checked out for a period of two weeks and picked up from our headquarters off of Ruffin Road in central San Diego. (Teachers who participate in the traveling trunk program have the opportunity to win a free field trip.)
The "Story-in-a-Box" project was created to help engage with children on the topic of climate change through art and storytelling. Inside the Box is found: a detailed description of how to use the resources in the box, a list of climate change books available in the library system, a list of related children's books that correspond to various pages in the climate books, and several corresponding art projects. These are activities that support the efforts of furthering climate education to those involved.
Climate Kids is a collaborative effort that is nested within the work of the Climate Science Alliance-South Coast (www.climatesciencealliance.org), whose vision is to inspire a new generation of children in K-6th grade to be climate champions and stewards of the planet. The Climate Kids project brings together partners that have a shared vision to educate children on climate change through art, science and storytelling. Through partnerships with climate scientists and qualified educators, the program encourages curiosity about the natural world while providing youth the tools necessary to make educated decisions about how to protect our planet in the future.
