Summary: To provide RJ Wilson Elementary School with books for their library, and theater reader kits in English and Spanish.
Early childhood literacy has been identified as both a local and national area for improvement. It has been shown that children who do not read at their grade level by third grade struggle academically for the remainder of their academic life. Our club has partnered with RJ Wilson Elementary School, a low income, multi-lingual school, to help encourage students to embrace reading and improve their abilities. For our project we would like to purchase additional books for the library and several kits (in both English and Spanish) which have demonstrated their usefulness as an intervention and enrichment aid for students who need help improving their reading skills. These kits encourage reading through live action skits and plays that require students to read the materials then act out what they have read. We anticipate purchasing the materials with 1-2 weeks of receiving funds and the school will utilize the materials immediately. Club members will be involved in two ways: 1.) the purchase and distribution of the materials listed above and 2.) Our club regularly attends and distributes rewards to students who have achieved A & B grades for the semester or who have demonstrated marked improvement in their grades from the prior grading period. We anticipate the materials purchased will help increase the number of students recognized for high achievement.
