This grant proposed by the Peoria North and Sun City Rotary Clubs will support the Arizona Broadway Theatre's Theatre for Young Audiences program. Budget shortfalls in the local schools have necessitated cuts for arts programming and have lessened opportunities for children to learn about, to experience, and to understand the world around them through the Arts. ABT with the assistance of grants to procure study guides, licensed scripts, and instructional sessions will be able to expand its current program reach the youth of the Peoria School District area.
Specifically, an enhanced, multi-faceted version of ABT's current Theatre for Young Audiences programming would incorporate activities in the language and visual arts as well as the performing arts to serve the needs of and broaden the experiences of local children whose access to the arts is limited. Support from the Rotary Clubs would enable TYA to not only present performances but also, through enhanced pre- and post-performance efforts in the form of study guides and instructional sessions, help children to understand the messages, the methods, and the dramaturgy of performances. ABT needs and wants not only to bring its TYA programming out into schools and libraries in the community, but also to bring the community INTO the theatre for enhanced artistic experiences.
This program is open to all children regardless of the economic and ethnic status.
Club members will be attending the various pre-performance sessions and performance to encourage the children. Individual members will meet with the school officials of the Title one Elementary schools to encourage the participation of their students.
Publicity will come at the performances and through the schools.
