For the past two years the McCook Rotary Club has presented each third grader in Red Willow County with their own personal large volume dictionary. It is the clubs desire to continue presenting dictionaries to this crop of new third graders.
Students in the county only have temporary use of dictionaries at schools and libraries and maybe at home. The standard Dictionaries are also written on an adult level making many of the defined words in those dictionaries above this grade level of understanding. By presenting each third grader with his or her own personal dictionary we have observed pride of ownership and many thank you letters from those student showing how they use them.
In September the club will contact the different third grade classroom in the county to obtain the number of dictionaries needed (Last year there were 160 third graders). Once the club has a firm number of dictionaries required it places an order for the $10.00/books.
The dictionaries are handed out by volunteer rotarian's in December. Each dictionary also contains a copy of the Rotary purpose and the four way test.
