The Dictionary distribution is a Rotary sponsored project providing dictionaries to 3rd graders in seven schools in South Dakota and four towns in Nebraska. Chadron Rotary has taken this local project and moved it to a larger scale by encompassing the surrounding rural and poverty stricken areas. Six schools in South Dakota are on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, which is known for adverse living conditions. The other areas of focus are Oelrichs, SD; Crawford, Harrison, Hay Springs, and Chadron, NE.
Rotarians distribute a dictionary to each student and spend 20 minutes going over the dictionary and the additional information in the final fourth of the book. The students are left with a book of their own and Rotarians have made a connection with the future generation.
The Dictionary Project will take place in September and October 2013, upon coordination with each school district schedule. The budget of $989.35 will be broken down into the following disbursements:
1. 360 dictionaries at $2.00 Each (15 boxes): $720.00
2. Printing Labels and Letters @ 10 cents per dictionary: $36.00
3. Distribution: 56.5 cents per mile for gasoline, 413 miles: $233.35
(Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, SD; Oelrichs, SD; Crawford, NE; Harrison, NE; HaySprings, NE) No mileage Chadron, NE.
