Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Marcos

Total Budget: $500

Area of Focus: None

Activity Type: RI Youth Programs (Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract, Interact)

Summary: San Marcos

This project will create and distribute "no-sew" fleece blankets to 24 underprivileged and/or abused girls in San Diego County. The project idea was developed with Chicktime, a women's rights and support group focusing on protecting children from cyclical abuse. The 24 recipients of blankets are underprivileged minors, many of whom are currently recovering from abusive situations. Our goal is to provide material and communal support needed to help these girls through their trying times.

Working closely with the Chicktime organization, the California State University San Marcos Rotaract club will purchase raw materials and create the "no-sew" blankets. "No-sew" is a method of creating durable, warm blankets from bulk fleece fabric. Miniature versions of these blankets were made earlier this year to benefit local animal shelters. Rotaract members will use a variety of fabric colors, designs, and patterns to create unique articles for each girl. The created blankets will fill a necessity of these girls and show Rotaract's support for their wellbeing. It is our hope that the extra time spent creating hand-made blankets, and the personal nature of this product will make the recipients feel welcome in our community, and with the Chicktime group.

Upon receipt of funding, materials will be purchased and processed by Rotaract members within a month. Items would be distributed during the first week of December at specified Chicktime events. Funding from the District Grant will be used exclusively for fleece material, purchased in bulk rolls. Funds contributed from the Rotaract budget will be used to purchase materials and tools, including: scissors, decoration supplies, holiday cards for blanket recipients, and baking materials for Chicktime's additional holiday events.
