Indigenous community elders from the remote village of Peña Blanca identified a need and presented Mayan Families with a detailed proposal to bring water to their homes, this entire project is a community initiated project. The community is not only actively involved in the planning pf the project but has provided all the labour for this project and will do so for the last phase. Additionally the community funded the distribution network.
● Phase 1-Completed: Construction and connection of the catchment box located by the water spring.
● Phase 2-Completed: Laying the piping to bring water down from the catchment box to the distribution tank just outside the town.
● Phase 3.1-Completed: Construction of a concrete distribution tank and laying piping connecting the distribution tank to two housing clusters at 3 km and 2.5 km distance respectively. The community themeselves funded this phase.
● Phase 3.2-Pending: To provide the materials needed to connect the houses and schools to the distrubution netowrk; piping, taps, adapters, etc. This phase will complete the project.
The Rotary Club of Fort Collins has been asked to assist with phase 3.2 of the above project. Once the funds are collected it will take a short period of time to complete the project and in turn provide long-term and sustainable access to clean freshwater. The project is expected to directly impact approximately 1000 Maya people.
