Project Description Country: USA Location: Greeley, Colorado Total Budget: $1,500 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Literacy Summary: Purchasing books through Book Trust for a Greeley classroom Greeley Redeye Rotary is committed to supporting education and early literacy in Greeley and Evans, the area we serve and in which our members live. We know that children need to be proficient readers, at grade level, by the time they reach third grade or their chance of graduating high school is greatly compromised. The Greeley Redeye Rotary Club would like to work with The Book Trust, an organization that was started in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Book Trust is a non-profit that allows elementary-age children to order books through Scholastic Books, and then keep those books to take home. Many children who live in poverty have limited access to books at home. Through the Book Trust, the Greeley Redeye Rotary would adopt a classroom and allow each students to select up to three books to purchased and take home. As part of the program, Greeley Redeye Rotary members will help deliver the books to the classroom we support, and read with the students. We will either support a classroom at Billie Martinez Elementary School or Maplewood Elementary School. Both of these schools have more than 90 percent of their students qualify for free and reduced lunch, an indication of poverty. The children would purchase their books in January, and the books would be delivered in early February with the help of our Greeley Redeye Rotary members. We are excited to promote literacy in our adopted classroom, and ensure that more students have access to books at home. This grant is essential to our project and will allow us to reach more children with more books. Thank you for your consideration. While the books were purchased, COVID-19 restrictions prevented our club from volunteering to distrubute the books.
