Summary: Providing loans to diverse international and/or US businesses listed on the KIVA.org website
|
For several years, our Rotary club has provided loans to many small businesses through Kiva.org. Kiva is an international nonprofit and their website states that more than 1.7 billion people around the world are unbanked and can't access the financial services they need. Kiva was founded in 2005 in San Francisco, with a mission to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive. A member of our Club's International Committee manages the Club's contribution to various Kiva businesses. Businesses include those owned and managed by women, those serving refugees, those which provide education or meet agricultural needs or are ecofriendly businesses. The money is loaned to businesses on the Kiva website, and when those loans are re-paid, the money is loaned to other businesses. Club members are involved through working with the International committee to discuss and select projects, and through Club programs held 1-2 times per year to showcase Kiva projects that have been funded and are available to fund.
