Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Girdwood

Total Budget: $1,000

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Development of Educational materials and publications to support bear education and awareness in the Girdwood Community.

Rotary Club of Girdwood supports bear education and awareness in our community. In Girdwood, it is essential that outreach focuses on urban bear interactions and the importance of bear aware practices to secure attractants and reduce conflict. Last year, following an active bear summer in Girdwood, we were pleased to see GBA (Girdwood Bear Aware) form to meet an interest and desire in the community to raise awareness and improve bear safe practices. We are eager to see our education mission amplified and strengthened by GBA.

Rotary Club of Girdwood is committed to partnering with GBA in the production of a brochure that is intended to reach new to Alaska residents as well as visitors. GBA will be collaborating with Rotary Club of Girdwood on the production of the brochure and we are pleased to have a Girdwood specific insert produced that would serve for distribution within Girdwood valley. Furthermore, we are excited to work with GBA to help provide materials and support wherever we can to support their mission and increase bear awareness through education and outreach.

In summary, Rotary Club of Girdwood submits our strong support for the GBA grant application for publication materials for 2019. We are looking forward to working with GBA this summer and in subsequent years and are excited to see GBA tackling bear aware education as their mission.

Hello, The Girdwood Bear Aware Grant has successfully brought bear safety awareness to the Girdwood community through fridge magnets designed to produce an eye-catching visual message about secure trash storage, a Girdwood Facebook page, and brochures for tourist promoting Girdwood as a secure trash community.

As the hibernation season draws near the Girdwood Bear Aware community organization is posting less human/bear interactions. This group has a website: http://girdwoodbearaware.org, a phone number for reporting bear activity within the community of Girdwood (907-406-9349) and a Facebook page called "Girdwood Bear Aware". During the bear season, the group was able to deploy "un-welcome"mats to discourage bears from breaking into homes or returning to garbage cans and dumpsters. The mats were electrified to give the bears a non-lethal shock as a deterrent. In addition, Nils Pedersen from the Wind River Bear Institute & the Alaska Department of Fish and Game partnered with Girdwood Bear Aware this summer. Using three karelian bear dogs, Nils implemented a Bear Conflict Resolution Program.
