Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Kearney, NE

Total Budget: $3,500

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: Hot Meals Disaster Response Trailer

Hot Meals USA has coordinated a partnership with the Red Cross and Salvation Army to deploy self-contained cooking trailers to provide water and food under certified sanitary conditions to support disaster recovery. The units can be brought directly into the location to serve safe water and food to the first responders and victims within 24 to 72 hours. After that, they will be available to serve large facilities and groups of people in need. Depending on the trailer size, 2500 to 10,000 meals a day will be served out of the trailers. Red Cross or Salvation Army will provide the water, food and supplies with additional truck for Hot meals USA to run the operation serving the people located in the disaster area.

State Emergency Managers, FEMA, Red Cross and Salvation Army will control deployment of the units. Hot meals USA will be directed by the American Red Cross, Salvation Army or FEMA to provide water and food to the area. Their mission will be to provide safe water and food through sanitary safe conditions to victims affected and first responders of natural disasters. The sites will be operated by Serve Safe Certified trained personnel to insure safety under certified sanitary procedures. Trained Rotarians will have opportunities to actively engage in supporting disaster relief.

Objectives of the project:

• Provide clean water and food to first responders and victims of disasters

• Provide sanitary preparation facilities to disaster areas

• Train volunteers on the Serve Safe Certification processes

• Set up and manage a disaster recovery location in conjunction with local EMS

• Train and engage local Rotarians & volunteers to support disaster recovery in their

areas.

Scope of the project:

Twenty-four-foot dual axle trailer will be fully equipped with self-contained cooking facilities to provide up to 2,000 meals per day. Multiple trailers can be connected together based on the need. The trailer will have a three-quarter ton pickup dedicated to the unit.

The new equipment provided by the project will be owned, operated, and maintained by the Hot Meals USA organization, which is governed by a nine-member board of directors.

Classroom and online training will be developed through a partnership with the University of Nebraska Extension Office to provide the Serve Safe Certification training for operators and community volunteers including Rotarians.

Operators will receive training from the Red Cross and Salvation Army on how to operate during a disaster.

Community outreach training (train the trainer) will be offered to various service and community organizations to have trained personnel available to support disaster locations
