Project Description Country: USA Location: Anchoraage Total Budget: $3,000 Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General Summary: Provide money for seeds to plant in garden boxes installed in the schools 2018 - 2019 in Anchorage One in five children go hungry in the Anchorage School District. Last year four local Rotary clubs worked together to build over 40 raised garden boxes and will be or have installed them all at over 10 area schools. This project is to provide the schools with seeds to continue the work started by installing the boxes. The produce raised in the boxes goes to the students or The Children's Lunch Box program to provide meals to these hungry children. This will help to establish the idea inthe children's minds the source of thier food and that it can be sustained and continueing. Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed) With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic the local schools were closed to in person teaching and students attended virtually. This has caused a slow down and in some cases stoppage of the students planting and growing food. It has not stopped the hunger these same kids suffer. We propose to use the remaining funds to work with Chinook Elementary, a Title I school, to distribute Turkey's and some or all the fixings to their students and their families many of which are low to moderate income. This distribution will be through Chinook's Turkey Bingo program which Anchorage South has supported for many years, by having members bring turkey's to a November meeting.
