Robotics League Revitalization

History Logs

Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Ketchikan, Alaska

Total Budget: $4,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Upgrade, repair, and/or replacement of robots for the teams in the Ketchikan, Alaska Elementary Lego Robotics league. Recruitment of coaches and mentors to restart/revitalize the robotics teams at several of the local elementary schools.

Funds are needed in the upcoming school year to upgrade, repair, and/or replace the robots for each active team in the Ketchikan, Alaska Lego Robotics league.

Funds would also be used to add more teams in the local schools because several schools no longer offer robotics. Fawn Mountain, Houghtaling, Point Higgins, and Tongass School of Arts and Sciences have been identified as elementary school locations where teams are needed.

Recruitment of coaches and mentors would be a part of the process, and a portion of funds would be put towards incentives for recruitment/retention of coaches and mentors.

A portion of the funds would also be used to purchase trophies for the Elementary Robotics Tournament at the end of the season.

Members of the Rotary Club of Ketchikan would be involved at all steps of the process from providing teams with their new equipment to recruitment of coaches to participating as volunteers at the Robotics Tournament. Interested members of the club could potentially serve in the coaching/mentorship roles for the various teams.

Competent engineers are needed for the future of our society, and Lego Robotics teaches children the building blocks.
