Many students in Todd County, South Dakota, which is part of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, and Cherry County, Nebraska come from a financially challenged area. The majority of these students do not have the means to purchase their own dictionary or their own books.
Providing dictionaries to these students will assist them in learning about the use of a dictionary for spelling, pronunciation and definitions of words. This knowledge will facilitate each student's education for years to come. The Valentine Rotary Club and the Valentine Interact Club will deliver dictionaries to the 3rd graders in the 22 elementary schools in these two counties, which includes 14 rural schools. Each student will receive a dictionary of their own to use in their studies.
The dictionaries will be delivered in the months of December and January, based upon the preferences of the teachers and administrators in each school. Rotarians and Interactors will team up to deliver the dictionaries to the students, discuss Rotary, the Four-Way Test and demonstrate how to use a dictionary. The project will be completed by February 1, 2013.
