In spite of rapidly expanding technology in the schools, 3rd grade teachers report to us the need for high quality dictionaries when learning literacy skills. This grant request will support the St. Paul Rotary Club's effort to provide dictionaries to 3rd graders in St. Paul, Loup City, Palmer, Elba, and St. Libory Elementary schools. These schools are located in 3 counties.
We will order 120 dictionaries at $11.50 each from the USA Dictionary Project for distribution in late November or early December. Teams of 3 Rotarians will deliver the books and do an activity based emphasizing the 4-Way Test and the importance of service above self to each classroom.
A Taco Feed will be completed to help fund the project. Club members will donate food and over 20 Rotarians will serve the tacos to the public.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
Initially, we had budgeted for 120 dictionaries. In the end, only 96 dictionaries were purchased, decreasing the total cost of the project from $1530 to $1248. I spoke with Don Peterson, District 5630 Foundation Chair, that we were under budget by ~$250. Because the amount was less than $500, it was recommended that a $250 donation be made to a separate charity. The St. Paul Public Schools administers a Backpack Meal Program for at risk children to insure that they have meals over weekends. $250 was donated to this program.
