Maryland Living Center in Hastings, Nebraska is a transitional residential facility for youth ages 16-21 who have experienced homelessness, foster care or in need of a secure living environment. These high-risk youth participate in an independent living curriculum which prepares them to care for themselves personally, financially and as contributing members of society. A wide variety of independent living classes are provided by professional volunteers and agencies, offering information, resources and services to transition to successful adulthood.
Completion of this curriculum takes students from 6-18 months to accomplish, depending on the individual and the specific circumstances.
Once students have completed all the requisite activities and classes and are prepared to find independent housing in the community, Sunrise Rotary will provide a collection of household set-up essentials, including kitchen items, laundry and cleaning supplies.
Each gift basket is estimated to cost approximately $150. Rotary will sponsor 10 graduates during the 2019-2020 year. Rotarians will gather and present these items at a recognition event next spring.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
With Covid-19 impacting this project only 1 student will be graduating from the project this spring. Additional students are anticipated to graduate later this year. As students complete the program gift baskets will be distributed.
