Project Description

Country: USA

Location: North Platte, NE

Total Budget: $1,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Provide $1,000 for the purchase of essential clothing for homeless high school students

Several years ago, North Platte High School Administration identified students who were homeless, even lacking adult supervision. These students, approximately 40 young people, survived by moving between friends, or living on their own and working in addition to attending school. NPHS Administration recognized the need to assist these students and created the Student Food Pantry. Community donations supplied washers and dryers so that students could have clean clothes to attend classes. This help to remove some of the stigma students felt regarding their condition. Community donations provide food to stock the pantry. Each year, North Platte Noon Rotary has a project to collect food items and school supplies for the pantry.

Unfortunately, the students have additional needs that are more difficult to meet. Purchase of socks, underwear and personal hygiene supplies are expensive and difficult to supply generically. Students sometimes struggle to have appropriate attire for job interviews. This grant would provide funds for the purchase of these items. The funds would be held by the North Platte Public School Foundation and would be distributed at the direction of the Food Pantry staff.

Louise met with Jodi Howard, Executive Director North Platte High School Foundation, to discuss the administration of the grant funds. Jodi indicated the funds would be set up as a unique line item within the Foundation financial reports. This will allow Rotary to receive an accounting of the expenditures. All expenditures will be authorized by Brandy Buscher, Student Services Coordinator. The funds can be used for any High School Pantry need at Brandy’s discretion. While needs vary by month, in general, the funds will be requested for food, clothing and shoes.

The check was presented to Jodi Howard, Executive Director North Platte High School Foundation, at the Rotary meeting on March 5, 2020.
