Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Kemmerer, WY

Total Budget: $6,200

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: The Rotary Club of Kemmerer, WY will partner with the City of Kemmerer, WY to install a pump and sprinkler system to irrigate the Barktopia Dog Park.

In 2016 the Kemmerer Rotary Club in partnership with the City of Kemmerer opened a community dog park. Barktopia was built with funding from a District Grant and matching dollars from the Kemmerer Rotary Club. The decision was made at that time not to irrigate. Over the past three years, the Dog Park has been utilized year-round even beyond what the city and Rotarians envisioned. Winter usage is frequent as human and canine residents need a place for fresh air and exercise as well as escape from the isolation imposed by long winters.

A deterrent to full enjoyment of Barktopia in the summer, however, are the prickly weeds (many of which are considered noxious) that naturally grow in this high desert country on land that is not irrigated. The City of Kemmerer and Rotarians agree that in order to provide full enjoyment of the park and to be good stewards of the land, Barktopia needs a sprinkler system. The Kemmerer Rotary Club is requesting a $3100 District Grant for a $6200 project to install a pump and sprinkler system. The plan is to pump water from the nearby Hams Fork River (this is currently done for the nearby municipal golf course) and to bring water to the park through an underground sprinkler system. City maintenance workers will provide the specialized equipment and labor, and Rotarians will assist with seeding. With the water pumped from the river and applied to the dog park, noxious weeds will be eliminated, and the dogs, their owners and family members will have a friendlier space in which to exercise, socialize and play. This project will be implemented in the summer of 2019. The City of Kemmerer will continue to own the property and be responsible for upkeep.
