Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Pocatello

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Purchase and install playground equipment and indoor games for children at the Pocatello Aid for Friends homeless shelter with materials and shipping cost $5,000.

Purchase and install playground equipment and indoor games for children at the Pocatello Aid for Friends homeless shelter with materials and shipping cost $5,000. http://aidforfriendspocatello.com/ See illustration document.

The shelter is moving to a larger, nearby location to be refurbished and improved in public-private partnership. Need for short-term homeless shelter has grown. More than 60 persons (current shelter overload capacity), including 20 children seek shelter daily because of eviction, transients in search of jobs, safety from domestic violence and many other reasons. The new shelter has increased safe living capacity and outside play space but lacks playground equipment. The new shelter will have indoor play space but lacks play equipment and materials such as games.

The new shelter, its facilities and equipment, and support programs overlaps three Rotary focus areas: Mothers and Children; Education; and Growing Local Economies. Playground and indoor play will provide opportunities for children to interact, learn and practice relationship building and diversity; give moms and dads some break to rest and attend job-related classes or seek jobs, etc

Total cost of new shelter rehabilitation is estimated at $1.8 million. Funding raised for this work is at about $1.2 million. Building refurbishment will start in July-August , 2019. The community campaign is closing the financial needs gap. The playground-games project will be an additional but needed community support effort. The project timing goal is to install outdoor equipment as soon as possible to be an outward and visual signal that will help motivate the community financial campaign. A Rotary banner will help tell our service story.

Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club is grateful for past District 5400 matching funds for community and global projects. The club assembly held on May 20 unanimously approved this project and others. Pocatello Centennial Club members will participate in fundraising, assembly and installation of children's play items.

Quotes for playground and game items are included as documents. The list includes items requested by Aid for Friends leaders and homeless shelter staff :

Spending Plan

Playground equipment Port Liberty playset $3,689 (Two quotes documented, best quote as of May 31, 2019)

Shipping quote $991

Set of indoor play equipment and games $320 (From menu of options provided. If better product/shipping price can be negotiated then budget for indoor play/games will be increased)

Installation materials and labor needed such as concrete footings to be provided by Centennial Rotary Club

Budget for the project:

Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club $2,500 (plus extra for tax, installation materials and labor)

TRF approved the district block grant on 7/9/19. The district received more requests for DDF than money available requiring that cuts be made in funding. Your project is reduced to $2250 of DDF. Clubs in tier 3 are expected to make up the difference in the project financing. We have cancelled the signature process and adjusted the financing to reflect this. To confirm your intention of continuing with the project, please send it again for signatures on the admin side of the description tab. Questions? Need help? Contact District Grants Chair Ines Crespo, 208 320-8494.

Progress Report.

The $5,019.78 project is completed except for final installation of playground equipment at the Aid for Friends Homeless Shelter. Playground equipment and indoor games are purchased. Invoices and check images in documents. Playground set $4,191 (WillyGoat); Indoor items $828.78 (Amazon by credit card). Indoor items delivered to current (old) shelter. Playground equipment (see photos) delivered to new shelter but installation delayed because of construction schedule and now COVID-19. Centennial Club work party will complete installation when COVID and site prep allow estimated August, 2020 and arrange additional publicity. The Rotary gift to the shelter prompted additional community giving. Need for the new shelter is increased because of COVID-19 economic impact.
