Purchase and install playground equipment and indoor games for children at the Pocatello Aid for Friends homeless shelter with materials and shipping cost $5,000. http://aidforfriendspocatello.com/ See illustration document.
The shelter is moving to a larger, nearby location to be refurbished and improved in public-private partnership. Need for short-term homeless shelter has grown. More than 60 persons (current shelter overload capacity), including 20 children seek shelter daily because of eviction, transients in search of jobs, safety from domestic violence and many other reasons. The new shelter has increased safe living capacity and outside play space but lacks playground equipment. The new shelter will have indoor play space but lacks play equipment and materials such as games.
The new shelter, its facilities and equipment, and support programs overlaps three Rotary focus areas: Mothers and Children; Education; and Growing Local Economies. Playground and indoor play will provide opportunities for children to interact, learn and practice relationship building and diversity; give moms and dads some break to rest and attend job-related classes or seek jobs, etc
Total cost of new shelter rehabilitation is estimated at $1.8 million. Funding raised for this work is at about $1.2 million. Building refurbishment will start in July-August , 2019. The community campaign is closing the financial needs gap. The playground-games project will be an additional but needed community support effort. The project timing goal is to install outdoor equipment as soon as possible to be an outward and visual signal that will help motivate the community financial campaign. A Rotary banner will help tell our service story.
Pocatello Centennial Rotary Club is grateful for past District 5400 matching funds for community and global projects. The club assembly held on May 20 unanimously approved this project and others. Pocatello Centennial Club members will participate in fundraising, assembly and installation of children's play items.
