Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Weld County, Colorado

Total Budget: $8,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Provide books of nursury rhymesin Spanish and other languages to promote literacy prior to kindergarten.

The High Plains Library District (HPLD)Foundation works to promote literacy levels of the residents in Weld County, Colorado. Currently the Foundation is seeking funds to replenish highly demanded Spanish 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (1,000BBK) materials and expand the multilingual Nursery Rhyme Booklets to other languages. Reading to preschool-age children is the single most effective way to help them become proficient readers both building vocabulary and language skills. Reading success in school begins with positive language and literacy experiences beginning at birth. 1,000BBK provides our youth with he early literacy skills they need to build a better future. 1,000BBK is the HPLDs primary early literacy program. The program currently has 2,570 registrants; 211 have completed the program and 266 have reached the midpoint of 500 books. Of those who have completed the program, a very large majority report increases in amount of time spent reading with their children, increased levels of reading enjoyment and library usage.

With a matching grant, Greeley Redeye's support of this primary literacy program will help make it possible to expand the program to include books in multiple languages of the immigrants and refugees living in our county. In addition to funding printing the books, our members will be volunteering with the HPLD to perform and record the nursery rhymes, finger-plays and songs to be included with the books. The financial contribution is needed ASAP. The volunteering opportunities will extend into the 2019-2020 school year.

Late in January, Redeye members gathered at the High Plains Library to stuff book bags with resources while still awaiting the arrival of the books.

Due to the COVID situation, Redeye members have not been able to participate in the distribution of the 1000 BBK book bags. Members were also planning to read to the children participating in the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Unfortunately this part of the Grant Project was also no longer possible.

In late February, Greeley Redeye Rotary members received a status update from Matt Hortt, Executive Director of the High Plains Library District regarding the Rotary District Grant they received for the 1000 BBK Literacy Program.

Since that time, more of the COVID restrictions have been lifted. It is our hope that before too much longer, we may be able to finalize this grant project with Redeye members participating in book distribution and even possible interaction with recipients of the books. Thank you, Jennifer Sears
