In the next six months or so approximately 160 homeless persons will be transitioning from temporary tent housing into permanent housing on their own. This transition is a daunting one for anyone let alone someone who has been living on the streets for some time. In order to assist in this difficult transition we are putting together the baskets, each of which contains about 35 basic household items including basic hygiene items - soap, detergent, toothbrushes and toothpaste, toilet paper, sanitary wipes, wash cloths and towels; eating and cooking utensils - silverware, plates, glasses and cups; cleaning supplies - broom and dustpan, 409, laundry baskets, etc. The project will involve putting together a little over 75 baskets a quarter. Each basket will cost approximately $50 for the 35 items (based on past experience with Welcome Home Baskets this past Rotary year). Members will shop for items at low cost stores such as Dollar Tree, Walmart, in bulk; will assemble and distribute the baskets. Each basket as in the part will have a personal handwritten note by a member wishing the recipient good luck from out Rotary Club.
