Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Chicago

Total Budget: $800

Areas of Focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Maternal and child health

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Art Supplies for Art Therapy for adults and children suffering from domestic violence; clothing for women who survived a sexual assault

Our club has been working with a local highly respected community organization, Mujeres Latinas en Accion, for several years giving amenity kits, blankets, socks and eye masks donated by several airlines companies to our fellow Chicago Rotary Club of O'Hare who in turn gave them to us to give. Mujeres Latinas en Accion used these kits, blankets, etc. to help women and children escaping domestic violence situations, as they move to safer situations.

We also in the past gave art supplies and clothing through a Zone service project. We asked what kinds of materials Mujeres would like and they requested these.

In addition we have donated an awning with sign in cooperation with our Coalition of Chicago Clubs to this organization.

Another project we have done is trauma relief classes for the staff and adult clients. They loved these and felt much relief. They learned techniques to calm themselves and relieve anxiety and fear (to use on their own after the session, whenever they need to) and experienced a guided meditation and some gentle yoga.

We wanted to continue our relationship and will give more art supplies for women and children experiencing domestic violence and clothing for women who have survived a sexual assault. The organization is notified when an assaulted woman is at the hospital, and Mujeres employees bring the clothing. The woman must leave some or all of the clothing she wore when the crime took place as part of the evidence of the crime. The clothes we donate are new and clean, stretchy and soft, so as to fit many sizes easily.

Mujeres conducts Art Therapy classes for adults and children and requested these supplies. Creating art after a traumatic experience give a focus to the feelings and helps to relieve them and create something positive from the negative experience.
