Micronesia is a much improvised area of the Pacific with substandard educational facilities; often schools are not much more than a hut to protect the kids from intense sun. This includes the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Yap and including Palau.
The books students currently use are those provided by the schools and are drastically out of date, in extremely poor condition and are used year after year for many years. It is rare kids have any books they can call their own.
This Grant proposal is to fund dictionaries for 3rd grade students in Micronesia as well as dictionaries for the 3rd grade students in Poway Unified School District. We are estimating sending 500 to 1000 books to Micronesia with the remaining staying with the local children. The contact and distribution of books in Micronesia will be administered by the Rotary Club located on the island of Guam. There are four Rotary Clubs on Guam and one in Saipan. We are expecting project completion by December 2013.
