Arlington Sunrise Club has provided a variety of support for Thornton Elementary School in Arlington, TX for several years. Thornton is located in a depressed area of Arlington and most of the kids come from minority families. When it came to the club's attention two years ago that many of these kids receive few, if any, presents at Christmas, club members decided to give each school kid a Christmas stocking prior to the holiday. There are approximately 800 enrollees so this has turned into a significant project. With this grant, the club would like to enhance the gifts in the stockings and also provide Christmas baskets to some of the more disadvantaged families of the kids. The stockings are assembled and distributed by club members in two phases - after the contents are purchased, members assemble to fill them. Then on the last day of school prior to the holiday, members go to the school to give them out. Funds would be required and disbursed in December 2019.
