The Rotary Club of Chula Vista respectfully requests $3,000 in district matching grant funds to support the building of a basic wooden-structure home and outhouse for a homeless family in Tijuana, Mexico.
For more than 10 years, Chula Vista Rotarians have partnered with Project Mercy, a 501(c)(3) organization that has constructed more than 1,300 homes for people living in Tijuana's most desperate communities. Families receiving a home typically live in shacks made of scavenged material with no running water, sanitation, or security. These living conditions expose them to health hazards, crime, and hopelessness. Every house built not only provides a solid and secure home for a family in need, but also hope for a better future.
Families receiving a home work alongside Rotarians from the Chula Vista and Eastlake clubs to build and paint a home with a cement foundation, secure doors and windows, and an outhouse based on plans and materials provided by Project Mercy. Financing for the project comes from the Chula Vista club. The building date has yet to be determined, and is somewhat dependent upon Project Mercy resources. In the past, Chula Vista Rotarians target the April-May time frame to build a home, although our 2019 home build occurred on June 1.
