The purpose of the project is to assist the less fortunate children in the Lewisville School District start the year with supplies and the required health screening to begin the school year. Our specific project is to purchase school supplies for this year's 5th grade classes of Central, Lewisville and Lakeland Elementary Schools. All of these schools are Lewisville High School feeder schools which is our designated area of schools we serve. This project is organized by a non profit organization, Heavenly Supply Depot. It is a part of an event held on August 17 where over 3,000 Lewisville School District Children will receive backpacks, school supplies, clothes and health screening. The health screening serves to educate the parents and assist in the fulfillment of state required health compliance regarding shots, vision, etc.
The LISD student population is over 25% English as a second language. In addition, Lewisville has been designated as one of the national zones to relocate the Chen population (refugees from Burma). These families are lower to no income and heavily rely on assistance. Helping their children break out of this cycle defines the Rotary Humanitarian aim of "Service Above Self"
Our club will volunteer both before (readying the supplies for distribution) and assiting with the actual event itself in distribution, crowd control, food preparation and distribution. Approximately one quarter of our club will participate. Specifically we are purchasing 205 Supply kits at $11.75 each for the 5th Grade population mentioned.
