The Sibley Rotary Club plans to partner with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office, The Porch on Main and the Sibley Ocheyedan Elementary School to provide a bike safety education day to the 1st grade class. We are planning a 2 phase education event. First phase will be in May of 2020 and the second phase in May of 2021.
This need for education has been identified by the community as we have observed children riding on the bike path or around town without helmets on. In an effort to foster education to this safety concern, we plan to hold the education during bicycle safety month, which is in May. The sheriff's office sends a deputy to present to the class and the Rotary club presents safety helmets to the class. The Porch on Main wants to partner this year and help with the education effort as well as provide ice cream certificates to the children.
Our objective is to increase the safety of our communities youth by giving helmets to the many children that ride their bikes in town on our bike path or to school. We have partnered this year with The Porch on Main ice cream shop. They have offered our club discounted rates to purchase ice cream certificates. We give those certificates to the sheriff's office. They hand them out when they see kids (all ages) wearing their helmets while biking. We are encouraging law enforcement as a positive relationship with our community's youth. We have been working with the county sheriff and the school with the intent that all children use a bike helmet when they ride.
By providing free helmets to the 1st graders, bike safety will not be determined by a family's financial situation or their ability to purchase these important safety helmets. We will purchase the helmets through ProRider, Inc and the ice cream certificates will be purchased through the Porch on Main ice cream shop. Sibley Rotary members will cooperate with the sheriff's office and partner at the education event, as well as The Porch on Main. We will also hand out bike helmets that same day. We anticipate that once ice cream certificates are handed out, word will spread fast to see if the youth can be "caught" riding safely!
Cost of the helmets are $5.95 * 110 helmets + $137.50 tax and freight. The ice cream certificates are $200.
