Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Sioux City

Total Budget: $8,500

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Providing adequate lighting and security for the Mary J. Treglia Community House in Sioux City, IA.

Mary J. Treglia Community House was established in 1921 to serve the needs of newcomers to the Siouxland Community. It is located at 900 Jennings Street in a low-income neighborhood in Sioux City, Iowa. Throughout it's nearly 100 year history and beginning with Mary J. Treglia herself, the organization has worked to identify the needs of the immigrant population in Siouxland through education, services, advocacy and celebration of diversity. Upon understanding that the community has a need for quality certified early childhood (preschool) spots, the MJTCH Board explored the possibility of providing a quality DHS certified preschool. The work was done and the DHS certified preschool program became a reality this past spring and has received a QRS rating and a DHS license. In order to pass all inspections, it has been advised that MJTCH place adequate lighting outside as well as inside our building where the preschool classroom is housed and in the gymnasium where the children and youth of our community play and have sports practices. The grant request would be used for purchase and installation of updated LED outside lighting (the current lighting system is not functioning), motion lighting for the main entrances, and the replacement of gymnasium lighting. The organization's objective is to not only provide more security for those who come to Mary J. Treglia House for preschool and other events, but also for the entire neighborhood which currently is very poorly lit.
