Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Wasilla, Alaska

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Inclusive playgound for children with disabilities and handicaps.

Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club is planning to construct an "inclusive playground" at Newcomb Park on Wasilla Lake this month. You can watch our progress from the Parks Highway. The Mat-Su Valley is one of the fastest growing areas of the State and the demand for services for residents with physical and/or developmental disabilities is growing. Unfortunately, there is a general lack of accommodation for the younger generation in this population segment, and, as a Club we are committing to help meet some of this demand with this proposed project. Rotary's inclusive playground will be located next to the newly constructed playground for 2 to 5 year olds that the City of Wasilla began building last fall. Our $50,000 project will complement the new City playground and will include accessible activities for handicapped and developmentally disabled children. The City of Wasilla will be assisting our club with administration of the project in the city park and they are fully on board with the project. I have attached photocopies of some of the descriptive literature that identifies and explains the project that we are planning.

Funding for the project includes a bequest left to the Club by a Rotarian, Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club community service funds, other community sources include Mat-Su Health Foundation grant of $10,000, the Trust Foundation grant of $15,000 and other private donations.

Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club respectfully requests additional donations to assist us in making this project a success for the Wasilla community. Additional information relative to this request will be gladly provided upon request. On behalf the individuals and families who will benefit from this project, the women and men of the Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club thanks you for considering our request.

Wasilla Sunrise Rotary Club is a non-profit organization affiliated with Rotary International. Our goal is to make a better community and better world. Locally, we provide a wide range of other community service projects as a single club or in concert with one or more of the other Rotary Clubs in the Valley. On an attached page we have included a short list of some of our projects over time.

Sincerely,

Dan Kennedy, President
