Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Staten Island, New York

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Purchase & Deliver food to Staten Island, NY food pantries to give help and hope to struggling families

Hunger touches every community. It is hard to believe that over 1000 Staten Islanders need help daily. Our "Hunger Hurts" initiative is aimed to address this need. The Club members assist in keeping food pantries stocked at various times of the year. Using grants, donations and the generosity of our members, we are able to help at times of the year when, perhaps, people aren't thinking of giving as much. The Club members purchase food in the local market and deliver it to a food pantry/closet that not only feeds people in its immediate area but also supplies other food pantries in need. Our Foundation Chairman stresses that "usually people are generous to donate food for the holiday season but the 'Hunger Hurts' initiative helps fight hunger all year long."

The funds raised through this grant will be matched by our Club and used by April 30, 2020.

This is an ongoing project. Our next replenishment of the food pantry will take place at the end of this month and will be continue through May with additional replenishments in January and May.

2-Dec-19

by Mary Jane O’Connell

Our next replenishment of the food pantry will be in January. We will again have collect a $25 member donation as well as have a special Sunshine to fund this event. We will then purchase requested food items, deliver them to the pantry and assist in restocking the shelves. This is an ongoing project and plan on restocking again in the Spring.

For our Hunger Hurts program we are making plans to install shelving at the food pantry for them to better organize our food donations for distribution to the members of the community. We are in the process scheduling a time to meet and measure so we can begin to purchase supplies. Members of the Rotary Club of Staten Island will all pitch in to get this project accomplished quickly.

Our Hunger Hurts project has expanded to include another pantry in need of restocking. We are also working with both pantry’s to add new shelving so they have more room sort and store the many items. One pantry needs the floor painted which we will complete before installing new shelving. We have asked our Interact club to participate in the project.

Our project Hunger Hurts is on hold temporarily due to the Covid virus. The pantries that we supply are currently closed but are depending on us to restock them as soon as they deem it safe for their volunteers to reopen. We anticipate being able to do this before the end of June.

2-Jun-20

by Mary Jane O’Connell

Our Hunger Hurts project is still being carried out. We are scheduled to paint the pantry floor and assemble the shelving we purchased tomorrow. Next week we will restock the pantries we support for reopening. This will exhaust our funds and complete our Hunger Hurts project for this year.

We will be completing our project by delivering the supplies needed to reopen the food pantry on Monday June 29th. This project has been a very hands on project for our club throughout the year. We shopped for supplies and delivered them several times, painted the floor of the pantry, bought and assembled new racks to help organize the food and supplies for distribution. It’s been very rewarding to see the appreciation shown by those running the pantry in helping them serve their community.
