Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Jackson

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Constructing a restful corner of May Park for all ages and abilities

The May Park is close to senior, disabled, low-income and young-family housing. It is the perfect setting for an innovative park design to encourage quiet enjoyment of the natural setting for our diverse community. The Wellness Garden is designed to ensure and enhance accessibility for an inclusion of older adults and people of all ages and abilities. It inclues native plants, an exercise meadow, walking paths, exercise stations, picnic area, shelters, fencing, a labyrinth, and water features. The estimated total cost is $500,000.00. It is a project in partnership with "Age Friendly Jackson Hole", Y2 Consultants, Leeds Landscape Architecture, and Teton botanical Garden, the Community Foundation, Senior Center, and Teton County Parks and Recreation Department. Rotary JH Breakfast has donated $1k and seeks a $1k match to assist "Age Friendly Jackson Hole" to obtain pamphlets, bulletin boards, marketing materials, presentation space, and landscaping/benches to encourage additional community support in this overall park project.

The money supplied by Rotary and this Grant will be used for the promotional materials, posters, signage, banners, booths, and brochures. Rotarians will donate 10 hours manning informational booths to raise financial support community-wide for May Park. Rotary will also install 2 benches in the park, donate the concrete materials, and provide the installation.

Our Rotary group volunteered to host and work the BBQ event to raise awareness and sponsors of this Wellness Park. Because of COVID this BBQ was cancelled at this time. When rescheduled we will again volunteer our hours. The Park continues to seek contributions to begin construction in the meantime.

We committed to providing service hours to this project (we previously funded) by hosting a BBQ fundraiser in Spring 2020. Because of COVID and the shut-down at that time, this BBQ was postponed. This spring/summer Teton County, WY remains in the "red" with COVID cases and a mask mandate. The BBQ has again been postponed. It is believed that the BBQ will be rescheduled for spring 2022, but this is dependent on COVID numbers and potential future mandates.

This project was on hold because of COVID19 and then our incredible amount of snow. To update the service piece and finish this project, Rotarians will be volunteering 1 hour each to clean up the park, providing over 10 hours of community service. Upon completion of the clean up, this project will be finished.
