Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Ocean Beach, San Diego

Total Budget: $750

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Disaster Recovery

Summary: Funds to non-profit Doors of Change to provide meals for homeless youth in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

Doors of Change is a well established non-profit (doorsofchange.org) that provides free meals and other services to homeless youth, ages 18-25, in Ocean Beach, San Diego. It also provides music lessons and art lessons to the youth, which develops trust, and keeps the youth returning to the program. A social worker on site provides additional services. Old Mission Rotary has been cooking and delivering home cooked meals for Doors of Change since December. Due to the coronavirus, Doors of Change is handing out sack lunches to the youth in lieu of having volunteers cook meals. Old Mission Rotary is providing $500 to Doors of Change on a continuing basis, so they can purchase food for the sack lunches. Our club seeks a $250 matching grant to enable us to provide funds for additional food. The funds will be provided over the next few months until the club is permitted to cook meals on our own again. More than a dozen club members are involved in cooking and delivering meals, and will resume that role as soon as it is safe to do so.
