The spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has had a significant impact on all of our lives, but it is our healthcare providers who bear the burden of continuing their work during this time of crisis to care for our neighbors and loved ones. With the increasing demands on our hospitals and staff, Sharp Coronado Hospital has created the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund to ensure the continued safety of our frontline caregivers.
In the likely case of an influx of patients diagnosed with COVID-19, Sharp Coronado Hospital is preparing for an increased demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including masks, gloves, and protective gowns. These items will minimize the risk of illness spread, keeping our doctors, nurses and hospital team safe to continue tending to the well-being of our community. Project funds from Rotary will be used to ensure the hospital's stock of PPE remains sufficient, as we move into an unprecedented demand from the pandemic. We anticipate the largest surge of patients to occur in the next 30-60 days and would use Rotary funding during that time.
Additional funds from the COVID-19 Emergency Fund will support the purchase of a Xenex Germ-zapping Robot. Xenex robots use UV light to remove deadly pathogens in patient rooms and hospital spaces in under 20 minutes. Sharp Coronado Hospital already owns and operates one of these robots. Funding to support an additional robot would speed up the sterilization process allowing for multiple spaces to be disinfected at the same time.
The improvement of health is at the core of the Rotary Foundation's mission and now, more than ever, it is critical that we work together to support the well-being of our community. Please consider helping to provide our frontline caregivers with the items they need to remain healthy and able during this time of emergency.
