Needs: Literacy grant requested for textbooks for students at Santa Rosa de Lima School in the extremely poor La Mesa district of Tijuana, a school at which there is no charge or tuition of any kind. Students attending this school cannot afford the fees for public school and Santa Rosa de Lima represents the only opportunity for an education for them. The school, which opened in 1990, has a total of approximately 450 students, and relies completely on donations of labor and funds to meet its expenses. How the Project Will Meet Needs: Project will provide textbooks which the government does not provide and can only be acquired with donated funds. They are essential to enhance literacy in these indigent students. Textbooks would cover the areas of English, Spanish, Spanish Literature, math, science, and history. They will be purchased from the Maris Brothers Publishing Company in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
Timeline: After approval of this grant in September, books will be purchased and then transported to the school. The project will be completed by the end of Februrary 2014.
Funds To Be Used For: Funds will purchase textbooks for use by Santa Rosa de Lima students and are critical in the enhancement of their literacy.
How Rotary Members Involved: Club members will collect funds and transfer to Santa Rosa de Lima School for purchase of textbooks and will monitor the purchases to ensure compliance with project requirements. A Club Rotarian taught at the school from 2006 to 2008 and maintains an on-going relationship with the founder and head administrator of the school.
