Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Boise

Total Budget: $19,810

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: To provide leadership training to 75 low-income youth in Boise, Idaho

This grant would be used to implement Everyday Leadership at three Title I, low-income schools (Garfield, Whitney, and Koelsch Elementary Schools) within the Boise School District. Approximately 75 students would benefit.

The goal of the program is to increase the odds that that low income youth will succeed scholastically and professionally by equipping them with life skills (leadership, teamwork, communication, cooperation, conflict resolution, and decision making) and building their self-confidence.

This is a collaborative effort uniting (1) the schools'teachers and principals, (2) Treasure Valley YMCA instructors, (3) Boise School District Directors, (4) BIGS from Big Brothers and Big Sisters of SW Idaho, and (5) Rotarians from Rotary Clubs of Boise Metro and Boise Sunrise.

Rotarians play a central role in organizing and facilitating the project. In addition, about 20 Rotarians would meet with the students to lead discussions, serve as cabin monitors and assist in leadership exercises at the camp, and provide logistical and transportation assistance throughout the school year.

Historically, the program has been very successful. Grades have increased; behavioral problems have decreased; and many of the participants have gone on to accelerated learning programs in junior high school.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

We received approval to change the project description by substituting Morley Nelson Elementary School for Whitney. The change was made because Whitney finished the 2019/20 school year with a surplus of funds designated for Everyday Leadership.

Your project summary needs to be a short sentence that explains the project. It should provide information about what activity is being funded, who is benefiting from the activity, and the name of the location of the project or activity, including the city or country. For example, "Five computers provided to schools for children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia." Please fix this, and then resend your grant for signatures.

Everyday Leadership is up and running thanks to a virtual curriculum developed by our partners at the YMCA. The curriculum will be used by the schools until they can resume in person classes.

We would like to make a change in the schools listed for our grant, dropping Whitney Elementary and substituting Morley Nelson Elementary. We are requesting this change because Whitney is receiving surplus funds from a grant they received last year. We are not requesting any other changes.

22-Dec-20

by Ines Crespo

Your change request is granted. You may substitute Morley Nelson Elementary for Whitney Elementary.

29-Dec-20

by Robert P Rainville

I have prepared an addendum to the project description, substituting Morley Nelson Elementary School for Whitney. The change was made because Whitney Elementary School ended the 2019/20 school year with a surplus of fund designated for the Everyday Leadership program.

Progress Report

COVID19 pandemic required that leadership classes and community service projects be canceled in the fall semester.

Development of a remote learning curriculum enabled initiation of spring semester classes. Some schools are doubling up on classes to make up for time loss in the fall. Schools completed at least one community service project during the spring semester.

The Leadership Camp is uncertain. Out of a concern for the spread of the Corona Virus, the School District requested cancelation of our May leadership camp. The camp is an important experience for the students,. We hope to be able to reschedule the camp in September. As a result of school closures, 41 students are participating.

I request a delay in our Completion Report until September.

Thank you for the update. This will serve as your May 15, 2021, reporting requirement. Your final report is due May 25, 2022. If the leadership camp can not be completed in September 2021, please reach out to grant chair, Ines Crespo, at ines@glassinbalance.com or 208-320-8494.

The Financial Plan for P3261 needs to be modified. Due to COVID19 restrictions, schools were closed during the fall semester and our Leadership Camp was canceled. We propose using surplus funds to (1) cover the costs for instructors and supplies at five participating low-income schools; (2) purchase Buddy Benches for participating schools. and (3) assist Everyday Leadership students in completing a playground improvement project at Taft Elementary School. The revised Financial Plan has been uploaded to the project. I request your approval for these changes.

7-Jan-22

by Robert P Rainville

In the 2020/21 Everyday Leadership finished the year with a $16,031 surplus due COVID related school closures and cancelation of the Leadership Camp. At the direction of the Rotary Foundation, the surplus was carried over into the 2021/22 year to fund Everyday Leadership Instructors, supplies and transportation for seven participating schools.

I have prepared addendums to the project description and proposed financing for 2021/22. I have also prepared a revised Financial Plan to account for the increase to seven schools. The net change is that Boise Sunrise Rotary has committed to pay an extra $245.
