As a component of emergency preparedness for a catastrophic earthquake/tsunami event the Nehalem Bay Emergency Volunteer Corps (NBEVC), in conjunction with American Red Cross, has identified shelters to accommodate evacuees. It is probable that city water and sewage treatment would be unavailable for many months due to earthquake damage, with consequential public health risks. This project equips the shelters with water filtration, storage and sanitation supplies, consistent with Rotary's WASRAG experience and advice.
The Rotary Club will transport, clean and prepare donated food-grade buckets from the Tillamook Creamery, equip them with high-tech filters and provide other supplies. This will be done before the end of 2013. A detailed list of requirements has already been prepared and is available.
As a public outreach the Club will also work with NBEVC and a local recycler (Cart'M) to demonstrate appropriate equipment for individual households to prepare for their own emergency water and sanitation needs. These "how-to" displays will take place during the summers of 2013 and 2014.
The project budget includes:
20 pairs of "Berkey" activated carbon filters: $2,140, Faucets: $100, Residual chlorine test strips $350, Storage drums and jerry cans: $675, Pump: $120, 20 Toilet seats for 5-gal drums: $280, Shipping: $335, TOTAL: $4,000
