Project Description

Country: Guatemala

Location: Sector Izabel, GC

Total Budget: $600

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Disaster Recovery

Summary: This project will supply at risk elderly widows with food and protective gear for first responders in Guatemala

Guatemala 's president is a doctor so he has been approaching the Covid-19 epidemic with prudence. Rules are people can leave their homes only for a few hours a day for purchasing groceries and banking. 90% of the population is very poor and out of work therefore they do not have basic needs like food readily available. Public transportation is prohibited. Vehicles going from one region to another are prohibited except important health and government vehicles and these need to be fumigated. There is not enough protective gear for the fumigators.

This grant will provide 1) food for a population at risk and 2) protective gear for volunteers responding to the crisis.

1) Food all over Guatemala is in short supply and expensive to buy. But for the elderly population it is reported that they have no money and very little food left. This grant will provide groceries for 22 widows in the southern sector of the municipality of Sector Izabal, near Guatemala City. These women are elderly and forgotten. Although the government is providing food for families with children in various communities, there is no government program in place for the elderly who have no money nor resources. The Guatemala Rotary Club, Vista Hermosa, will supply the transportation of the food, requested in this grant, enough to last a little more than a month for 22 widows. Amount is $450.

2) A donation of 5 protection kits for volunteer personnel who were organized to fumigate vehicles entering the Cerro San Gil communities, near Sector Izabel is also requested. Vista Hermosa will take care of the shipment. send by Guatex or Cargo Expréss. Amount is $150.

Vista Hermosa Club in Guatemala will cover any additional costs and manage the programs on the ground in Guatemala. This club has had many successful international rotary grants and can be relied on for delivering as promised.
