Piyali Junction is located about thirty miles east of Kolkata, where much of the village lives on less than $1 per day. Piyali Learning Center, with its primary support from donations, provides a holistic education for over 200 girls including math and English as well as computer science and dance. Each student receives books, stationery, uniforms, breakfast and lunch, hygiene kits, and medical check-ups. For many of the girls Piyali Learning Center provides the difference between a productive life or abuse and exploitation.
Funds for this project will be applied toward the purchase of text books, literary works, and related school books to be purchased locally and donated to Piyali Learning Center for the use of its students. The project contact person will travel to the school with a group consisting of teachers and Rotarians to visit and work at the school for a period of up to two weeks. During this time the specific need will be assessed and the books will be purchased.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
The portion of the project description above that reads, "Funds for this project will be applied toward the purchase of text books, literary works, and related school books to be purchased locally and donated to Piyali Learning Center for the use of its students."; is corrected to read, "Funds for this project will be applied principally toward the purchase of 'reading-for-pleasure' books, and related literary works, to be purchased locally and donated to the students of Piyali Learning Center."
