Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Dictionaries for all 3rd graders in Kenai area

Approximately 700 3rd graders live in and around Kenai. To help facilitate their studies we want to give them an age appropriate dictionary. For many this will be the first book they own and likely the only dictionary in the home.

We have 13 schools from North Kenai, down to Kasilof. Including Hope, Cooper Landing and Moose Pass. Our goal is to provide dictionaries to all in this area.

Club members will deliver the books and, if possible, discuss what Rotary is, why we are providing the books and practice looking up words with each class.

Timeline is dependent on each school but anticipate delivery in the Spring of 2021.

Anticipated cost per dictionary is $4.95 but might be as high as $9.99 depending on vendor.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

CHANGE IN PROJECT - NEW PROJECT SUMMARY: VOCATIONAL SCHOLORSHIPS

Project description: Provide up to 3 students up to a $1,300 scholarship for entering/continuing to pursue a vocational degree at our local college. We expect applicants from our 2 nearby high schools as well as our alternative high school.

Our criterion is to focus our priority on needy students who are enrolled or accepted at a Vocational institution. If we are unable to find students who fit this criterion, we will NOT issue the scholarships. (No monies will be dispersed to the students directly.)

Reason for change: Covid-19 pandemic and budget cuts to the local community college has left many students struggling to afford college. Our club believes this is a unique time to assist those at the Vocational College level over the more traditional 4-year college students.

Update - 06/22/2021 Payments in the name of to:

J. Aaronson for $1,300 to Avtec, Seward

M. Grieme for $1,300 to Kenai Peninsula College, Kenai

S. Ley for $1,300 to Kenai Peninsula Colloge, Kenai

All receipts already uploaded in documents.
