Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Chicago Heights Park Fore

Total Budget: $1,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: Literacy

Summary: Dictionaries provided to all 3rd graders in Chicago Heights and Park Forest

Each year every third grader in Chicago Heights and Park Forest elementary schools receive their own dictionary.

With our club residing in a low-income area (Chicago Heights & Park Forest), the importance of literacy is stressed. Sadly, for many of our students this is their very first book that they own. Most of them are excited to receive their books. It is the hope these students will get the value out of the dictionary with all of the useful information it provides.

Each dictionary will receive a label on the inside pocket of the book listing our club name and the 4-Way test.

Last year, in total 15 schools that included 37 classrooms were visited. 740 dictionaries were distributed, 671 to students and 69 to individual classrooms for use in the room.

Ten Rotarians will participate in this project in different capacities with a goal of visiting and delivering to each classroom by the end of October.

First, Rotarians will help with the delivery of all of the boxes of dictionaries at a fellow Rotarians house.

Second, stickers will be put on each book describing our club and listing the 4-Way test

Third, each classroom will be contacted and books divided for the amount of students in each classroom

Fourth, each classroom will receive a visit by Rotarians where they will introduce themselves and mention the 4-Way test

Finally, each student will receive a dictionary
