Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Homer, Alaska

Total Budget: $4,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Construction of a fire circle at Karen Hornaday Park for use by the community of Homer, Alaska.

Karen Hornaday Park is a beloved recreational facility in Homer. It is well-used by all ages. Multiple sports are played on the athletic fields. A new, large, creative playground was installed in 2012 funded by donations/grants and built by hundreds of community volunteers. Phase 2 is now set to go and the Homer-Kachemak Bay Rotary Club wants to be a part of it. An old dilapidated covered picnic area is to be removed. A new picnic area will be built. Our club will be responsible for the fire circle which will include a concrete pad, 2 rock-faced benches, a firepit. This fire circle will be a fine addition to the park providing a warm space for visitors to eat, to chat, to interact with one another.

Phase 2 is to begin in August, 2013 and should be completed by November, 2013. Landscaping may have to wait until the summer of 2014.

I see the park and our contribution to it as improving the quality of life in our community. The park provides recreational opportunities and space for all ages. It, also, allows children and adults to come together in a positive environment. The need for community spaces and positive interaction has been identified by a community survey which our club helped to sponsor at our Health Fair.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

The construction will be done by the City of Homer, Public Works Dept. As the project progresses our club will assess along with the city how we can help with hands-on labor.

The project was halted last fall by winter setting in. I went by the site last week to see what was up and no work was being done. I had been told that the crew would get in as soon as break-up happens. The goal is to have the project finished by Memorial Day. That reamins to be seen.

On the Individual Project Final Report form, under the financial report section, the line with 3,497.00 should be changed to read 6,994.00. This change would be made in two places.

I am sorry for the original error.
