Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego County

Total Budget: $1,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: This project supports adult education on sustainable and regenerative activities in the San Diego region, providing professional certifications through workshops and hands-on activities.

The San Diego Sustainable Living Institute offers hands-on trainings to guide San Diego into an abundant "green" future: one home, one neighborhood, one community at a time. They solve global environmental problems through local, backyard, farm, and business solutions.

They are industry sustainability experts drawing from a range of experience in watershed understanding, permaculture, holistic design, and eco-business. The San Diego Sustainable Living Institute is educating the next generation of permaculture and water harvesting experts.

Their program offers valuable certifications and additional educational programs:

- 12-day Permaculture Design Course: internationally renowned certification on regenerative ecosystems, helping students start their own business or join a growing workforce oriented to support the environment.

- Natural Building Certification: The long-range goals of this program are to train builders, create job opportunities, help launch future businesses, and form a network of trained builders who can grow the capacity and depth of the high-performance natural building community in San Diego and beyond.

- Water Harvesting Certificate: Holistic & Integrated Water Management; The water harvesting certification course is designed to train a new generation of leaders on the intricacies of rainwater, greywater, and stormwater harvesting.

- Podcast: Permaculture for the Future is about spreading positive and impactful stories, tips, and ways that each one of us can transition into a regenerative lifestyle. They talk about simple ways to make lifestyle changes and interview authors, teachers, and other folks that are collectively healing ourselves and the planet.

This project would help reach out a wider audience, expand their curriculum, or offset the cost of courses (a certification course costs approximately $1,500 for a student). Since the pandemic hit, they adapted their program to go virtual and meet physical distancing requirements while maintaining a high-value learning experience.
