Summary: Building of a medical clinic in Shikunga, Kenya
The North Platte Noon Rotary Club, along with several other District 5630 partnering Rotary Clubs and individual donors are raising funds to build a medical clinic in the remote village of Shikunga, in western Kenya. This is the poorest area of that country and NP Rotarian Dr. Kim Baxter, who is an optometrist, has traveled to this village for two eye care missions (most recently with DGE Bob Mayber) and another time in conjunction with a $136,000 District 5630 Global Grant to provide updated equipment and medical training for the neonatal/maternity wing of the nearby Kakamega County Hospital.
It is estimated that this new medical clinic can be built in Shikunga for roughly $24,000 plus additional dollars for equipment. The clinic will provide a wide variety of medical services to the impoverished people of that area, including eye care, dental and other medical care of various specialties. There are currently no such medical facilities or services available within a large area around Shikunga, so we know that many of the surrounding villages in this very poor, rural area of Kakamega County will be served by this new medical clinic we propose to build. Realistically, this project will likely take 2-3 years to complete, requiring pooling of our District Grants throughout this same time period.
Once the construction of the building is completed, we anticipate being able to furnish and equip it mostly with donated medical equipment and supplies, with the remainder to be purchased through added donations. We also plan to establish a small foundation to provide ongoing funding for staffing, supplies, and maintenance of equipment to ensure long-term sustainability for this medical clinic.
See attached spreadsheet for itemized project costs.
Club members will be involved with fundraising, securing donated medical equipment and work on the clinic and within the village.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
Made request to District Leadership for assistance in reopening the grant financing to update the budget to reflect the doubling of the size of the clinic and to report additional contributions of approximately $18,000.
THIS UPDATE APPLIES TO GRANT P-3511 AND GRANT P-3811
As planned, construction of the clinic began in June 2021. A number of unforeseen issues arrived shortly after the initiation of construction. The budget prepared by the Kenyan architect anticipated the bricks would be made by the construction team, but were instead purchased. The expanded footprint of the clinic necessitated the destruction of an existing outdoor toilet. The Ministry of Health required the construction of a replacement facility which was larger than the original building. As has been experienced worldwide as a result of the pandemic, the cost of materials and transportation were significantly greater than anticipated. Construction was halted in December 2021 when existing funds of were expended.
The expenditures to date:
• 2020 - 2021 District Grant P-3511 $37,400
• 2021 - 2022 District Grant P-3811 $32.749
• Additional outside contributions $ 5,000
* Total $75,149
Kenyan National Elections will be held during August 2022. We have been advised that civil unrest typically follows the elections. For this reason, it is not recommended to travel to Kenya until after year-end. The political unrest will also impact material costs and transportation. Coupled with the cost/price instability resulting from COVID 19 supply chain issues, it has been decided to continue the hold on construction until 2023. Hopefully this will provide time for prices/costs to stabilize.
Expenditures vs budget are recorded in a spreadsheet stored in "Documents". Receipts are available to support the expenditures. Because of the volume, presentation and cost in shillings, it is not practical to upload the actual receipts into this grant. However, documentation for all items is available upon request.

A zoom meeting was conducted 11/1/20 involving North Platte Club members, doctors and the architect. Size and structural design for the building and floor plan layout were discussed. Overall size of the building is now larger than originally planned, it will be 50'x80' with potential for expansion down the road. The building will be "brick and mortar" with a metal roof. A reliable generator will be necessary, they are exploring solar power. Size of patient rooms, the need for a storage room, a pharmacy and an "office" space were discussed. A summary of the meeting is being included in the documents. $3500 is being wired to Kenya to pay $500 to the engineer that is helping with the project, secure building permits and pay for initial phase of site preparation.
