Summary: Project would provide a free book to every first grade student in the 7 Title I schools in the San Marcos Unified School District.
Students from socio-economically disadvantaged homes have less access to books. This limits their opportunity to become efficient readers. "A number of studies confirm that given access to comprehensible and interesting reading material, children and adolescents take advantage of them. More access to reading results in more student reading." (Krashen, 2004) Providing students with a book that "is theirs" and the experience of a community adult reading to them will reinforce the value of reading. It will also enhance SMUSD's existing quality literacy program. This project will require the purchase, the distribution and the reading to students of approximately 1250 books
