Summary: Providing Round Trip Boat Fare to Needy Community Members for Medical Treatment and Care
The Rotary Club of Avalon, in conjunction with the Catalina Island Medical Center's medical and social services staff has recognized a continued great need in our community that we hope the grant committee will consider funding. Our Island community has a very small hospital and clinic that cannot provide surgical or specialty services such as dialysis, administration of chemotherapy/radiation for cancer treatment, or care by specialists. A large number of people needing these services cannot afford the boat fare and therefore do not get some the medical treatment recommended. If this District Grant is approved, we will be able to provide round trip boat fare for qualifying community members for their appointments on the mainland. Presently the cost of an adult round trip boat ticket is $72.50. The applicant will be screened by the business office and social services department at Catalina Island Medical Center once their medical appointment is confirmed. The Medical Transportation Grant Committee comprised of members of the Rotary Club of Avalon will purchase the boat fare and distribute the tickets to those community members. Our Rotary club members will also offer free transportation to and from the boat terminal here on the island as community service. The boat ticket will display the Rotary Seal and be accompanied by a letter describing Rotary's focus on disease prevention and treatment. The budget for the Project would include the cost of the boat tickets. Envelopes, stationery, rotary seals had been previously purchased. Transportation to boat terminal will be provided by electric golf cart (if requested).
