St. Anne Grace Secondary School was started in 2005 and currently has 350+ students. This school is located in Nakifuma in the Mukono District, 25 miles outside Kampala. The local population in Nakifuma consists of farmers and traders. The campus accommodates four classroom buildings and one girls' dormitory. Girl students outnumber boys. Boys who board at the school are still sleeping in a classroom, awaiting a dormitory. Classrooms are very crowded. The Headmaster, Mr. Kiwanuka Joseph, recognizes the need to also train students for practical life employment, and has introduced vocational training into the curriculum, including farming, welding, carpentry, animal husbandry, tailoring and embroidery and baking.
Currently, students fetch drinking water from a contaminated pond off campus, ~ 0.5 mile across a busy road. As you can see in the pictures, this pond is covered with algae, which the students scrape aside before they collect the water. The water is not clean, and now the pond is drying up, so students can barely fill their jerrycans. Students are leaving the school because of the lack of water. There is an urgent need for a borehole water well on the campus of this school. This deep well will give them clean fresh water and will not dry up.
Quench and Connect (www.quenchandconnect.org)is a 501(c)3 non-profit public charity working to improve academic achievement of high school students in Uganda by providing academic support and borehole water wells on the campuses of rural schools. The borehole is drilled deep (150-200 feet) to the aquifer, water is piped to the surface, and connected to a hand pump so the students can fill jerrycans with fresh clean water.
Simple mechanical operation of the pump is ensured for many years. The borehole is sealed so the water can never be contaminated. In each case, attendance and academic achievement improve dramatically because the students' health improves, allowing them to study.
Upon receipt of the Rotary Club of Coronado $3,000 district grant budgeted amount and an approved Rotary District 5340 funding of a District Grant of $3,000, combined with the contribution of $2,627 of funds raised by Quench and Connect, the borehole water well will be fully funded and can be ordered from DRACO (U) LTD. The CEO of Quench and Connect, Dr. Kathryn Ely, of Point Loma, CA has assurance from Dr. Flavio Pasqualato, Managing Director of DRACO (U) LTD that the well can be installed within three months. Dr. Ely intends to travel to Nakifuma, Uganda in March, 2014 to inspect the well and participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony with the students, staff, and community of St. Anne Grace School. The Quench and Connect Club at Coronado High School has been supported financially and through club projects by members of the Coronado Rotary Club. The New Generations Director and the International Director remain committed to working with the Quench and Connect Club and Interact Club at Coronado High School to raise funds for the students at St. Anne Grace School.
