Project Description

Country: Mexico

Location: Juarez

Total Budget: $4,800

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: Construct pre fabricated homes at a vocational school in Wellington, CO and ship to Juarez, Mexico for families in need.

The purpose of this project is to construct two pre-fabricated houses at the newly formed Top Craft Development vocational education school in Wellington, Colorado and then ship these houses to Juarez, Mexico for final construction.

This district grant application is for the construction of two houses for two families in Juarez, Mexico. The houses will provide shelter for two families that need a place to live. We have an excellent relationship with Club Rotario Campestre, our partner Rotary Club in Juarez. This will be the second and third house our club has provided working with the Rotary Club in Juarez.

For more than 12 years, Rotary clubs have been supporting Club Rotario Campestre in

Juarez, Mexico by pre-fabricating homes locally and then sending these homes to Juarez for final construction. These homes are then gifted to families in need of housing. During these 12 years, a total of 42 homes have been shipped and assembled for needy families in Juarez.

Students in the construction trade and possibly non student volunteers will build the homes in prefabricated units for assembly in Mexico. While the houses will ultimately end up in Juarez, Mexico, we consider this component a local project with the local students learning construction skills related to housing that can help them obtain skilled construction jobs. This project has been successfully implemented in Denver through the South Jeffco Rotary Club and that club will provide transportation to Mexico. We will use the money to purchase the material needed to build the home. Each home costs $2,400.00 to build and ship to Juarez.

We want to acknowledge a cash contribution from the Rotary Club of Estes Valley, Sunrise, who contributed $2,500 toward the construction of these two houses.

We also want to thank the Rotary Club of Cheyenne for their generous donation of $800 toward construction of these two houses.

Our club will coordinate the home construction of both homes through Top Craft Development vocational school in Wellington, CO and arrange for shipping to Juarez. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Torey Lenoch, owner of Top Craft, may need to use volunteers other than students to construct both homes. Construction is expected to be started in the spring of 2021. This grant request is similar to P-2517 which was successfully completed.
