The project will address educational needs identified through a feasibility study undertaken by two teachers from the Denton area. To that end, the teachers visited three primary schools, three secondary schools, the governmental ministries of technical education (INATEC) and the state ministry of education (MINED) to interview and administer surveys to directors, teachers, and students. Local Chinandega Rotary members arranged and accompanied many of the meetings. The summarized results and recommendations are in an attached document and inform the specific project description that follows.
The Denton, Denton South, Southlake and Metroport Clubs of District 5790 have been teaming for six years with the Rotary Club of Chinandega, Nicaragua to provide humanitarian aid to impoverished children of Chinandega. This project extends that effort to provide vocational and university education in the region around Chinandega. The projects directly benefit the impoverished children in the area who have been devastated by several hurricanes over the past decade. This project will provide classroom tools to help prepare students to obtain productive jobs when they finish their education in schools in different high-need areas of Chinandega: IMAOH Secondary School, San Benito School, El Limonal Primary School, and Rafaela d'Arbelles Special Education School. No part of the funds requested in this application are to be used for any aspect of construction of a building. The provision of humanitarian resources to this region, through the action of Rotarians, has had a positive impact on child mortality, crime, child abuse and child labor, as well as general, gradual stabilization of the area inhabited by children of the dump.
IMAO Secondary School - provide classroom supplies for a cellphone repair course and home appliance course. Once the classroom supplies are in place, INATEC will provide teachers for each of these 2 courses. These courses will be available to the 4,500 students in the school. The Director of the school asserts that the school could provide funds for the maintenance of the equipment used in these technical classes using income from two snack bars on campus.
El Limonal - Provide textbooks and basic school supplies. The El Limonal area is home to refugees from Hurricane Mitch who have lived on the land surrounding the Chinandega dump for 13 years. Rotary has assisted to build this school and other infrastructure for this community, and the school supplies will be given to the school for use in educating these children.
San Benito School - Provide eight additional computers to install in the school library to complement the four that Rotary has already provided this school. Local government institutions INATEC and MINED will provide teachers and Internet connection respectively, for a minimum of 20 students per class and 10 computers for Internet connectivity.
MINED (The Ministry of Education, Chinandega branch) - Special education school housed on the MINED grounds. Supply 10 mats, special typewriter, walking sticks and toys for the autistic students and tools for the visually impaired students.
